Indiana opened the B1G Championship Game by punching first, picking off Julian Sayin on the opening series with a simulated pressure backed by a non-traditional Tampa variation. It wasn’t just aggressive, it was calculated. And if you’ve been following the Hoosiers, you know this isn’t the first time they’ve rolled out this flavor of Tampa 2. For coaches who lean on Cover 2 principles, this variation is one you’ll want to add to the toolbox.

This NTT variation looks like your standard pressure package up front, but the real twist is in the deep coverage. The safety technique is what separates it. Instead of the traditional Mike running the pole in Tampa, the safety becomes the runner. He plays it more like a robber, working off the quarterback’s eyes. Think of it as a blend between Tampa and 2 Steal, aggressive underneath with vision and instincts up top.

In this example against Ohio State, the route combination falls perfectly into the trap set by the Hoosiers. The Buckeyes run a curl-flat concept with a spot route settling over the middle. The safety rotates into the hole with patience, keying the quarterback the entire time. As soon as the quarterback splits his hands, the safety breaks and drives on the throw. It’s textbook execution of vision-based coverage with zone eyes.
