The return of under center football is here, and while I don’t think we return to the 21 personnel under center days of old, we’re starting to see a lot more under center, and under center explosives. So, let’s take a look at some under center runs from a team that has evolved, but also never stopped running from under center in the last decade, the North Dakota State Bison.
Belly G Toss
Here we see the Bison run Belly G Toss out of 12 personnel against a bear front. They do a great job on the down blocks, especially handling the nose, then the guard gets the kick and the fullback leads the running back to the promised land. This is a great goal line play and can be more effective than power since the puller stays play side and allows for a quicker hit for the run.
Duo
Duo equals double teams, and the Bison get three of them here. Both double teams are executed well, the linemen stay patient, and then they come off for the linebacker when they declare. The tight end also does a great job handling the 9 tech. This is textbook duo and a great job executing by the Bison.
Outside Zone
Outside zone has become the Bison’s bread and butter over the last handful of years. One thing I like that they do is run outside zone to the weak side, which they do here. Front side they do an excellent job, but the back side guard makes the play here by staying square, getting lateral, then working to the play side linebacker.
